The Toyota RAV4 PHEV has arrived in Australia, marking a significant step in Toyota's multi-pathway approach to reducing emissions. For the first time, RAV4 customers can choose a plug-in hybrid powertrain - one that combines the familiarity of a hybrid with the added capability of charging from an external power source, giving you genuine electric-only driving for everyday trips.
Available in three variants - XSE 2WD, XSE AWD, and the all-new GR Sport AWD - the RAV4 PHEV Australia launch brings Toyota's first PHEV model to market with a powertrain designed to suit a wide range of drivers. Whether you do most of your driving around the city or you spend time on the open road, the RAV4 PHEV is engineered to handle both.
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV, works differently to a standard hybrid. Where a conventional hybrid charges its battery only through regenerative braking and the petrol engine, a PHEV uses a significantly larger battery that can also be charged from an external power source - a home wall socket, a dedicated EV charger, or a public charging station.
The result is a vehicle that can run on electric power alone for a meaningful stretch of everyday driving, then switch seamlessly into hybrid mode for longer trips or when the battery charge is low. For drivers who cover short to medium daily distances but occasionally need the range and flexibility of a petrol-hybrid, the PHEV sits in a practical middle ground.
The RAV4 PHEV uses Toyota's sixth-generation plug-in hybrid powertrain, pairing a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with one or two electric motor generators depending on the variant. The 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery supports both 50kW DC rapid charging and 11kW three-phase AC charging.^1^
The RAV4 PHEV range opens with the XSE 2WD, which uses a single front electric motor generator alongside the 2.5-litre petrol engine for a combined maximum output of 201kW. This variant delivers up to 121km of electric-only range under WLTP test conditions.^1^
Step up to the XSE AWD and a second electric motor generator is added to the rear axle, providing all-wheel drive capability and lifting combined maximum output to 227kW - making it the most powerful RAV4 ever produced. The AWD variants offer up to 113km of electric-only range under WLTP test conditions.^1^
At the top of the range sits the all-new GR Sport AWD. It shares the same 227kW AWD powertrain as the XSE AWD but adds a 20mm wider track, front performance dampers, a rear brace, and unique spring, damper, and steering settings tuned for a more engaging drive. The GR Sport also receives aerodynamic enhancements and a distinct exterior and interior presentation that sets it apart from the rest of the RAV4 range.
| Variant | Drive | Combined Max Power |
|---|---|---|
| RAV4 XSE PHEV 2WD | 2WD | 201kW |
| RAV4 XSE PHEV AWD | AWD | 227kW |
| RAV4 GR Sport PHEV AWD | AWD | 227kW |
The RAV4 PHEV's 22.7kWh battery can be charged in several ways. At home, a standard wall socket will top up the battery overnight, making it straightforward to start each day with a full electric charge without visiting a public charging network. For faster charging, the RAV4 PHEV supports 11kW three-phase AC charging and 50kW DC rapid charging, giving you flexibility when you need it.
For drivers whose daily commute or regular errands fall within the electric range, a PHEV can mean covering those trips without using the petrol engine at all. On longer drives, the hybrid powertrain takes over automatically, so you are never limited by charge availability the way a battery electric vehicle can be in areas with less charging infrastructure.
The standard RAV4 Hybrid (HEV) is a self-charging hybrid. It uses regenerative braking and the petrol engine to keep its smaller battery topped up, and it never needs to be plugged in. For many drivers, particularly those who do not want to think about charging at all, the HEV is an excellent choice.
The RAV4 PHEV suits a different kind of driver. The larger battery and the ability to charge externally means you get meaningful electric-only driving range each day, which can reduce fuel consumption significantly if you charge regularly. The PHEV also delivers more power in all variants - 201kW on the 2WD and 227kW on AWD variants - compared to the HEV's outputs. If performance matters as much as efficiency, the PHEV is the stronger choice.
Both share the same core RAV4 platform, safety features, and interior quality. The decision comes down to how you drive, where you drive, and whether regular charging fits your routine.
