What Is a Plug-In Hybrid?
A Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) combines a petrol engine with a larger, rechargeable battery and one or more electric motors.Unlike a regular hybrid, you can plug a PHEV into a charger to drive using electric power alone for up to 100km (based on overseas development targets).
That’s more than enough range for most daily trips in and around Perth. And when the battery runs low,the petrol engine seamlessly takes over—giving you the peace of mind of extended rangewithout having to stop and recharge.
What is the range of a PHEV?
The electric-only range of a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) varies depending on the model, battery size, and driving conditions.But most modern PHEVs offer between 40km and 100km of electric driving on a full charge.
In the case of the all-new Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid, the targeted electric-only driving range is up to 100km,based on the WLTP test cycle (a global standard for measuring vehicle range and efficiency).This means many Perth drivers could complete their daily commute, school drop-offs, or errands without using any petrol at all.
Once the battery is depleted, the vehicle seamlessly switches to hybrid mode, combining petrol and electric power to continue driving without interruption.
How long does it take to charge a PHEV?
The time it takes to charge a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) depends on the charger type and the battery size. For the all-new Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid, here’s what you can expect:
Using a standard home power point (AC charging):
Approx. 6–8 hours for a full charge (using a regular 240V outlet)
Using a dedicated AC wallbox (11kW):
Around 3 hours for a full charge
Using a DC fast charger (50kW):
10% to 80% in about 30 minutes
How often do you need to charge?
Drive under 100km per day
You can drive almost entirely on electric power and charge daily or every other day, depending on how much range you use.
Drive more than 100km in a day
The petrol engine will automatically take over when the battery runs low, so charging becomes less urgent—you can simply plug in when convenient.
If you forget to charge
No problem. A PHEV like the RAV4 simply runs in hybrid mode until you can recharge again.

Do you have to plug it in?
