What Is a Performance Hybrid? The LandCruiser Hybrid Explained

What Is a Performance Hybrid? The LandCruiser Hybrid Explained banner

If you have started looking into the new LandCruiser 300, you have probably come across the term "performance hybrid" and wondered exactly what it means. It is a fair question, because most hybrid cars are built and marketed around saving fuel. The LandCruiser Hybrid is built around something different: more power and stronger towing, with the hybrid system working alongside the engine rather than instead of it.

In this article we explain what a performance hybrid actually is, how the technology in the LandCruiser Hybrid came about, and what it means for the way the car drives and tows. We will also look at where this particular hybrid system was first used, because it did not start out in a LandCruiser at all.

What Does "Performance Hybrid" Actually Mean?

Most hybrid cars, including popular models like the RAV4 Hybrid, are built for efficiency first. The electric motor helps the petrol engine work less hard in everyday driving, which lowers fuel use. A performance hybrid flips that priority. The electric motor is there to add power and torque on top of what the engine already produces, particularly from a standing start and under load.

That is exactly how Toyota describes the LandCruiser Hybrid. It is not the most fuel-efficient way to move a LandCruiser. It is the most powerful way. The hybrid system exists to make a heavy, capable four-wheel drive feel stronger and more responsive, especially when it is loaded up or towing.

How the LandCruiser Hybrid Powertrain Works

The LandCruiser Hybrid pairs a twin-turbo petrol V6 engine with a single electric motor-generator, badged by Toyota as i-Force Max. The electric motor sits between the engine and the transmission, adding torque exactly when the engine needs the most help, which is low down in the rev range from a standing start.

A relatively small battery sits under the rear of the vehicle. It does not power the car on electricity alone for any real distance. Its job is to support the petrol engine, not replace it, which is a very different approach to a plug-in hybrid. Drive is sent through a 10-speed automatic transmission to a full-time four-wheel drive system, so the LandCruiser Hybrid keeps the low-range gearing and off-road hardware that LandCruiser owners rely on.

The Tundra Connection: Where This Powertrain Came From

The i-Force Max hybrid powertrain was not designed for the LandCruiser first. Toyota originally built it for the Tundra, a full-size ute sold in North America. It is worth noting that the Tundra itself is not sold by Toyota Australia or New Town Toyota. It is not available here, so this is not a vehicle we can order or supply. What matters for LandCruiser buyers is the engineering it left behind.

The Tundra needed a powertrain that could tow heavy loads without hesitation, so Toyota built the i-Force Max around strong low-end torque rather than outright fuel economy. When Toyota Australia went looking for a more powerful alternative to the LandCruiser's diesel V6, this proven ute powertrain was the natural starting point. Toyota adapted it for the LandCruiser 300 platform, tuned it for Australian  conditions, and carried over the same philosophy: power and towing ability first.

So while the Tundra will not be parked in a New Town Toyota showroom, its engineering is part of the reason the LandCruiser Hybrid drives the way it does. Two very different vehicles, built for two very different markets, sharing one idea about what a hybrid system should be used for.

Performance Hybrid vs a Normal Hybrid

The easiest way to tell the two apart is to ask what the hybrid system is trying to achieve.

An efficiency hybrid, like the RAV4 Hybrid, is tuned so the electric motor takes as much load off the engine as possible in everyday driving, which is where the fuel savings come from. A performance hybrid, like the LandCruiser Hybrid, is tuned so the electric motor adds to what the engine is already doing, which is where the extra power comes from. Toyota has been upfront that the LandCruiser Hybrid uses more fuel than the existing turbo-diesel V6, because it has not been built to save fuel. It has been built to move a heavy vehicle, and whatever you are towing behind it, with more confidence.

Toyota's Long History With Hybrid Technology

Toyota is not new to hybrid technology. The first Prius arrived in Australia in October 2001, and Toyota Australia has since sold more than 500,000 hybrid vehicles locally across five generations of hybrid technology. Today, nine models in the Toyota range are hybrid-only.

Almost all of that experience has been built around efficiency hybrids, cars like the RAV4 Hybrid and Camry Hybrid, where the goal is lower fuel use. The LandCruiser Hybrid is Toyota's first performance hybrid application in Australia, using the same underlying hybrid expertise for a completely different purpose. It is a sign of where Toyota's multi-pathway approach to electrification is heading: not one hybrid system for every vehicle, but the right hybrid system for what that vehicle is actually asked to do.

What This Means for LandCruiser Owners in Perth

For anyone who tows a caravan, boat, or trailer regularly, or who simply wants more in reserve when the LandCruiser is fully loaded with people and gear, the appeal of the Hybrid is straightforward. It keeps everything that makes a LandCruiser a LandCruiser, full-time four-wheel drive, low-range gearing, and serious off-road hardware, and adds meaningful extra torque on top.

It is not the grade to choose if fuel economy is the priority. The existing turbo-diesel V6 remains the more efficient, more affordable option in the LandCruiser 300 range. The Hybrid is there for buyers who have decided power and towing response matter more to them than running costs.
