A factory-engineered, warranty-backed lift in payload, designed in Australia for Australian conditions.

The new HiLux is about to get more capable in a way that fleet operators and Perth trade buyers will notice quickly. Toyota Australia has confirmed a locally-developed, factory-engineered Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) upgrade option for selected new HiLux 4x4 grades, launching from August 2026. The upgrade is fitted at the factory, retains the full Toyota warranty, and is compatible with all factory safety systems.

For Perth businesses already running HiLux fleets, or for trade buyers planning their next ute purchase, this changes the conversation around payload. Here is what is included, who it is for, and what we know so far.

What is the new HiLux factory GVM upgrade?

GVM, or Gross Vehicle Mass, is the total maximum weight a vehicle is legally allowed to carry, including the vehicle itself, all passengers, fuel, accessories, and payload. A GVM upgrade increases that maximum, which means a vehicle can legally carry more weight without going over its rated limit.

What sets this option apart is that it is engineered and fitted by Toyota itself, not added afterwards by a third-party workshop. Toyota Australia developed the upgrade locally and offers it as a factory-installed option on selected new HiLux 4x4 grades. Because it is factory-fitted, the HiLux retains its full five-year Toyota warranty⁹ and remains compatible with every factory safety system.

In Toyota Australia's announcement, Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations John Pappas said the upgrade lets customers “maximise the vehicle’s load-carrying capabilities,” with benefits across both fleet and private use.

    What the upgrade changes mechanically

The factory GVM upgrade includes targeted hardware changes to support the higher rated load. According to Toyota Australia's specifications:

    • Longer rear monotube shock absorbers
    • Ride height increased by up to 10 mm
    • Front axle capacity increased by 100 kg
    • Rear axle capacity increased by 280 kg
    • GVM raised to 3,500 kg
    • Maximum payload increased by between 372 kg and 435 kg, depending on grade
    • Total maximum payload of approximately 1,525 kg on eligible variants

Existing HiLux models already in service, and orders already placed before the option launches, are not eligible. The upgrade is only available as a factory-installed option from August 2026.

    Eligible HiLux grades

The upgrade option will be available on six new HiLux 4x4 grades:

    • HiLux WorkMate dual-cab chassis
    • HiLux WorkMate dual-cab pickup
    • HiLux SR Extra-cab chassis
    • HiLux SR dual-cab chassis
    • HiLux SR dual-cab pickup
    • HiLux SR5 dual-cab pickup

These are the work-focused HiLux grades that fleet, trade, and high-utilisation private buyers most commonly specify. The eligibility list is set by Toyota Australia and reflects the variants where the upgrade brings the most genuine value.

A factory-fit solution for Perth fleet and trade operators

For Perth fleet operators, two things matter most about a factory GVM upgrade. The first is the warranty position. A factory-fitted option means the vehicle leaves the factory rated and supported by Toyota at the higher GVM, with the five-year Toyota warranty intact.

The second is consistency. A fleet of 20 HiLux utes all built to the same factory specification is simpler to manage, simpler to service, and simpler to retire and replace at end of life. The factory option also remains compatible with the safety systems fitted at build, which matters for any business managing duty-of-care obligations around its drivers.

If your operation has been pushing close to standard HiLux GVM limits with canopies, drawer systems, tool loads, or service body builds, this upgrade is worth a direct conversation. The same applies to trade buyers building out a single HiLux as a working vehicle.

Pricing, availability and how to register your interest

Toyota Australia has confirmed the upgrade option will be priced from $4,000¹, with the final figure depending on the grade. The option launches in August 2026 across the eligible grades listed above.
