If you're considering an electric vehicle, the first question on your mind is probably: how far can it actually go? It's a fair question, and one that deserves a straightforward answer.
The Toyota bZ4X is Toyota's all-electric SUV, and with a WLTP range of up to 591 km in the front-wheel drive variant [G66], it covers more ground than most Perth drivers will ever need in a single day. But what does that range look like in the real world, on actual Perth roads, in actual Perth weather? Let's break it down.
The bZ4X is available in two variants, each with a 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery. Here's how the official range figures compare.
| Specification | bZ4X 2WD | bZ4X AWD |
| Motor Output | 165 kW / 268.6 Nm | 252 kW / 438 Nm |
| Battery Capacity | 74.7 kWh | 74.7 kWh |
| WLTP Range [G66][G67] | Up to 591 km | Up to 517 km |
| Energy Consumption (WLTP) | 138 Wh/km | 160 Wh/km |
| 0-100 km/h | 7.5 seconds | 5.1 seconds |
| Drive Type | Front-wheel drive | All-wheel drive (X-MODE) |

Based on consumption rate of 138 Wh/km. [G67] Results achieved for bZ4X AWD based on consumption rate of 160 Wh/km. Actual driving range may vary depending on accessories fitted, battery age and condition, climate, driving style, use of heating/cooling, traffic conditions and vehicle load. See toyota.com.au/explore/electrified/faqs for details.
These are WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) figures, which are designed to reflect real-world conditions more closely than older testing methods. That said, they are still lab-tested numbers. Real-world range depends on how you drive, the conditions you drive in and the features you use. More on that shortly.
Perth is a sprawling city, but even its longest daily commutes sit well within the bZ4X's range. To put it in perspective, here are some common Perth trips and how they stack up against a full charge.
| Trip (Return) | Approx. Distance | Charges Needed |
| Perth CBD to Fremantle and back | ~40 km | None |
| Perth to Joondalup and back | ~56 km | None |
| Perth to Rockingham and back | ~100 km | None |
| Perth to Mandurah and back | ~150 km | None |
| Typical weekly commute (5 days) | ~200 km | None |
| Perth to Busselton and back | ~460 km | None (2WD); 1 top-up (AWD) |
| Perth to Margaret River and back | ~550 km | 1 top-up recommended |
| Perth to Geraldton (one way) | ~420 km | None (2WD); 1 top-up (AWD) |
Distances are approximate and based on typical driving routes. Real-world range will vary depending on driving style, speed, climate control use, terrain, battery condition and other factors. Actual results will vary.
For the vast majority of Perth drivers, a single charge will comfortably cover your entire week of commuting, school runs, shopping trips and weekend outings. You could drive from Victoria Park to Fremantle, up to Joondalup, back through Midland and home again, and still have charge to spare.
Your actual driving range will differ from the WLTP figure. That is true of every electric vehicle on the market. Here are the main factors that influence how far your bZ4X will go on a single charge.
Higher speeds use more energy. Sustained freeway driving at 100 km/h or above will reduce your range compared to suburban driving at 50 to 60 km/h. If you're planning a longer highway trip, factor in a slightly shorter range.
Air conditioning and heating draw power from the battery. On a hot Perth summer day, running the air conditioning will reduce your range. The good news is that Perth's mild winters mean you won't lose as much range to heating as drivers in colder climates. The myToyota Connect app also lets you pre-cool or pre-heat the cabin while the car is still plugged in, so you start your drive with a comfortable cabin and a full battery.
Smooth, steady driving maximises your range. Rapid acceleration uses more energy, while gentle braking allows the regenerative braking system to recover energy and feed it back into the battery. Think of it like fuel economy in a petrol car: a lighter touch on the pedal goes further.
Driving uphill requires more energy than flat roads. Perth's coastal plains are largely flat, which works in your favour. If you're heading into the Darling Scarp or Perth Hills, expect a small reduction. On the way back down, regenerative braking will recover some of that energy.
Like all rechargeable batteries, the bZ4X's battery will gradually lose some capacity over time. Toyota backs the traction motor and driveline with a 7-year warranty [W2], and the vehicle itself with a 5-year unlimited kilometre warranty. That means even years down the track, the bZ4X will still deliver a range well suited to daily Perth driving.
Charging an EV at home is one of the biggest conveniences of ownership. You plug in overnight and wake up to a full battery. Here's a quick look at the charging options available to bZ4X owners.
| Charging Method | Time (10% to full) | What You Need |
| Home powerpoint (Mode 2) | Approx. 21 hours | Standard 240V wall socket. Mode 2 cable included with every bZ4X. |
| AC wall charger (Mode 3, 22 kW) | Approx. 3.5 hours | Dedicated wall-mounted charger installed by a licensed electrician. |
| DC fast charger (Mode 4, 150 kW) | Approx. 45 min (10% to 80%) | Available at public charging stations across Perth and WA. |
[G65] Charging times are indicative and may vary based on ambient temperature, charge level and charger output. The last 20% of battery capacity takes longer to charge. Frequent use of DC fast charging can impact battery performance and durability. Toyota recommends minimising DC fast charging usage. DC fast charging speed will reduce after the battery is charged to 80%. Refer to your owner's manual and toyota.com.au/explore/electrified/charging-your-toyota for guidance.
For most Perth drivers, overnight home charging on a standard powerpoint is all you'll need. Plug in when you get home, and you'll have more than enough charge for the next day. If you want faster charging at home, the bZ4X now supports up to 22 kW AC charging (doubled from the previous 11 kW maximum), making a dedicated wall charger an even better investment.

Planning a weekend away in Margaret River or heading up to Geraldton? The bZ4X can handle it with a bit of planning. Toyota recommends scheduling a charging stop roughly every 200 km on highway trips to align with fatigue breaks.
Perth's public charging network continues to grow, with DC fast chargers available along major routes including the Forrest Highway, Indian Ocean Drive and the South Western Highway. The myToyota Connect app helps you locate charging stations along your route, and a 45-minute DC fast charge from 10% to 80% is roughly the time it takes to stretch your legs, grab a coffee and check in on the drive.
For a trip like Perth to Margaret River (around 275 km one way), the 2WD variant could make it on a single charge in optimal conditions. The AWD variant, or driving in less favourable conditions, may benefit from one quick top-up along the way. Either way, the bZ4X makes weekend road trips achievable.
Range anxiety is one of the most common concerns for first-time EV buyers. Toyota addresses this with strong warranty coverage across the vehicle and drivetrain.
7-year traction motor and driveline warranty through Toyota Service Advantage [W2]
5-year unlimited kilometre vehicle warranty [W8]
5-star ANCAP safety rating (2025)
Capped price servicing through Toyota Service Advantage [TS4]
This is the same reliability-first thinking Toyota applies across its entire range. Whether you're buying a HiLux or a bZ4X, the commitment to long-term quality is the same.
Here's a simple way to think about it. The average Perth commuter drives around 30 to 40 km per day. Even with air conditioning, freeway speeds and a few extra errands, most drivers will use well under 100 km on a typical day. That means a fully charged bZ4X 2WD could cover five to six days of normal driving without plugging in, and the AWD around four to five days. In practice, most owners simply plug in overnight and start each day with a full battery.
For the vast majority of Perth lifestyles, the bZ4X offers more range than you'll use. And for those occasional longer trips, a growing public charging network means you can plan longer drives with confidence. Want to see the bZ4X range in action?
