Summer in Perth means one thing: it's time to get outdoors. Whether you're planning a family day out in Victoria Park, a relaxed afternoon with mates in Burswood, or a sunset session by the Swan River, there's no shortage of stunning spots to set up and soak in the best of what our local area has to offer.

We've rounded up four of our favourite picnic spots within easy reach of East Victoria Park. From riverside retreats to lakeside escapes, these locations have the space, the views and the vibes to make your next outing memorable.

Burswood Park

Sitting on the banks of the Swan River with views back to the city and Matagarup Bridge, Burswood Park is hard to go past. This sprawling 53-hectare green space offers something for everyone, making it a go-to for families across Victoria Park, Rivervale and Belmont.

There are sheltered gazebos with picnic tables, a secure fenced playground for kids, walking and cycling paths, and plenty of room to kick a footy or throw a frisbee. The heritage trail and art sculptures add a bit of culture to your afternoon, and the birdlife around the park is worth the visit alone.

Good to know: The park is close to Optus Stadium, so check the events calendar if you're planning a visit on game day. If you're coming from Carlisle or Lathlain, it's a quick drive across the Causeway.

Tomato Lake Reserve

Tomato Lake Reserve is one of the best kept secrets in Perth's eastern suburbs. The 1.6km walking trail loops around a picturesque lake filled with birdlife, including long-necked tortoises and waterbirds nesting on the island.

Multiple playgrounds (including a brand new all-abilities playground), shaded picnic tables and wide open grassed areas make it ideal for families. The onsite cafe, open Wednesday to Sunday, serves coffee, snacks and light meals if you need a caffeine hit after chasing the kids around.

For locals in Welshpool, Redcliffe and Cannington, it's an easy drive with plenty of parking on both sides of the reserve.

Good to know: There are two main picnic areas. Access from Oats Street for the main playground and cafe, or President Street for a quieter spot on the other side of the lake.

McCallum Park and Taylor Reserve

Located on the Swan River foreshore in Victoria Park, McCallum Park offers arguably the best city skyline view you'll find without leaving the eastern suburbs. It's a favourite for families from East Victoria Park, Carlisle and St James who want river views without the drive to South Perth.

The park features covered picnic shelters, a playground, basketball court, skate park and fitness equipment. The shared path connects to the Causeway and Heirisson Island, where you might spot wild kangaroos. It's popular with walkers, cyclists and families alike, and the train sculpture makes for a great photo opportunity with the city in the background.

Good to know: This is a popular venue for community events, especially around Christmas and New Year. Arrive early on weekends to secure a good spot with shade.

South Perth Foreshore

Just a short drive across the Causeway from Victoria Park, South Perth Foreshore offers one of the most iconic views in Perth. The city skyline reflected in the Swan River makes for a stunning backdrop to any summer afternoon.

The foreshore stretches along the river with plenty of grassed areas, covered shelters and wide open lawns. It's an easy spot to reach by ferry from Elizabeth Quay if you want to make an adventure of it, or a quick 10-minute drive from East Victoria Park.

Good to know: This is a popular spot for weekend picnics and evening gatherings, so it can get busy. Arrive early to nab a shady spot, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Tips for Your Next Perth Picnic

Before you head out, here are a few quick tips to make sure your day runs smoothly:

Check the facilities:

Not all public BBQs are created equal. Some spots have gas BBQs, others have electric plates. A quick search online can save you turning up with the wrong gear.

Arrive early:

Popular spots fill up fast on sunny weekends. If you've got a specific location in mind, aim to arrive mid-morning to secure your spot.

Check fire bans:

During summer, total fire bans can affect BBQ use in some areas. Check the Department of Fire and Emergency Services website before you go.

Respect the space:

Clean up after yourself, dispose of rubbish properly and leave the BBQ clean for the next person. It's just good manners.
