Backing into a tight spot? Navigating a busy car park? Your Toyota’s reversing camera is one of the most helpful features on board—and learning how to use the guidelines effectively can make your drive that much safer and easier. Whether you're driving a RAV4, Corolla Cross, or another Toyota model, here’s what the reversing guidelines mean and how to make the most of them.
When you shift into reverse, your multimedia display shows a live feed from the rear-view camera. Overlaid on this image are coloured lines designed to help you judge distance, alignment, and trajectory. Most Toyota models feature:
Fixed coloured lines (usually red, yellow, and green) showing distance behind your vehicle.
Curved lines that move as you turn the steering wheel, showing your projected path.
Think of the coloured lines as your parking assistant:
Danger zone (within approx. 0.5 metres)
Caution zone (0.5 to 1 metre)
Safe zone (1 metre and beyond)
Note: The red line is your hard stop—if an object crosses into this area, you're very close and should stop immediately.
Tip: Always turn and check your surroundings in addition to using the camera—it’s a guide, not a replacement for awareness.
Night-time visibility: The camera often works better than relying on rearview mirrors alone after dark.
Yes—some models let you turn off guidelines in the multimedia settings menu. But we recommend leaving them on for added peace of mind unless you're an experienced driver with a clear view.
At New Town Toyota, we’re here to help you get the most out of every feature. If you're not sure your reversing camera is calibrated correctly—or just want a live demo—drop by and we’ll be happy to show you how it works in your Toyota.
