The Toyota LandCruiser Prado has been a cornerstone of Australian adventure for decades. With the arrival of the all-new 250 Series, it has been completely reimagined for a new generation of drivers, while staying true to the off-road heritage that made it a household name.
The 250 Series is the first all-new Prado in over 15 years, replacing the long-running 150 Series that served Australian families and adventurers from 2009 to 2023. Built on Toyota's TNGA-F platform, it delivers a significant step forward in refinement, technology and off-road capability.
Key highlights include:
A heritage-inspired design drawing from the iconic 70 Series and FJ40, with squared-off grille featuring bold 'TOYOTA' lettering
Frame rigidity increased by approximately 50% and overall body rigidity up roughly 30% compared to the 150 Series
Electric Power Steering replacing the old hydraulic system, making the Prado significantly easier to manoeuvre both on and off road
A 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across every grade
Five-star ANCAP safety rating with Toyota Safety Sense including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane departure alert
Increased towing capacity of 3,500kg braked, an extra half-tonne over the outgoing model
Under the bonnet, the Prado 250 is powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology (V-Active). It produces 150kW and 500Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive. Combined fuel consumption sits at 7.6L/100km, and the 110-litre dual fuel tank gives you the range to cover serious distance between stops.
| Grade | Seats | Standout Features |
|---|---|---|
| GX | 5 | LED headlamps, 18" alloys, 12.3" touchscreen, panoramic view monitor, 10-speaker audio |
| GXL | 5 | Heated/ventilated front seats, 3-zone climate, electric tailgate, wireless charger, synthetic leather |
| GXL | 7 | As above, with foldable third-row seating for extra versatility |
| VX | 7 | Adaptive suspension, 12.3" digital cluster, 14-speaker JBL, premium leather, 20" alloys |
| Altitude | 5 | Off-road focused: Stabiliser Disconnect Mechanism, lockable rear diff, all-terrain tyres, moon roof |

One of the most significant additions to the Prado 250 lineup came in mid-2025 with the introduction of a five-seat option for the popular GXL grade. Previously, the GXL was only available with seven seats, which meant buyers had to compromise on boot space to get the mid-spec equipment they wanted.
The five-seat GXL removes the third row entirely, and the difference in cargo space is meaningful. With the rear seats up, you get 954 litres compared to 906 litres in the seven-seater with the third row folded. Fold the second row and that expands to 1,895 litres. The lower load floor also makes it easier to pack and unpack, especially for camping gear, prams or bulky items.
At the five-seat GXL is a little less than its seven-seat equivalent, making it one of the strongest value propositions in the range. If you don't need that third row, you get all the same premium features (heated and ventilated front seats, electric tailgate, wireless charging, 3-zone climate control) with genuinely usable cargo space.
The GXL remains the most popular grade in the Prado lineup, and with the five-seat option now available, it offers something for both growing families and couples who just want the space for serious road trips.
| Configuration | 5 Seat | 7 Seat |
|---|---|---|
| Rear seats up | 954 litres | 906 litres (third row down) |
| All seats folded | 1,895 litres | 1,829 litres |
| Third row up (7-seat only) | N/A | 182 litres |
The Prado has always been about getting you further than the bitumen, and the 250 Series takes that capability to another level. The new platform is significantly stiffer and stronger, which translates to better control on uneven terrain and improved towing stability.
Ground clearance sits at 210mm for the GX and GXL, rising to 221mm on the VX, Altitude and Kakadu. The Altitude grade is purpose-built for off-road enthusiasts, featuring a Stabiliser Disconnect Mechanism that disengages the front stabiliser bar for greater wheel articulation on rough terrain, a lockable rear differential, and Toyo Open Country All-Terrain III tyres.
With 3,500kg braked towing capacity across the range, the Prado 250 can handle a serious caravan, boat or trailer setup. The 110-litre fuel tank combined with the efficient 7.6L/100km consumption gives you an estimated range of over 1,400 kilometres on a single fill, which is ideal for long-haul trips across Western Australia.
The 48V mild-hybrid system assists with low-speed take-off and fuel efficiency, while a 17.4-litre AdBlue tank ensures the Prado meets current emissions standards without compromising performance.
Beyond the off-road credentials, the Prado 250 makes a strong case as a family vehicle. The seven-seat variants (GXL, VX and Kakadu) offer ISOFIX anchor points on both outer second-row seats, with top tether anchorages across all three positions. Independent testing has confirmed you can comfortably fit three child seats across the second row.
The five-star ANCAP safety rating (December 2024) includes nine airbags and a comprehensive active safety suite: autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist and oncoming vehicle detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, lane trace assist, road sign recognition, and a panoramic view monitor for easier parking and manoeuvring.
Families will also appreciate the practical boot features, including a glass tailgate that opens independently for quick access without swinging the full door, and the built-in 220V power outlet for charging devices on the go.
At New Town Toyota, the Prado has always been one of our most popular models, and the 250 Series has only strengthened that reputation. It is the kind of vehicle that genuinely does it all: school runs during the week, a tow vehicle on weekends, and a capable off-roader when the holidays roll around.
The introduction of the five-seat GXL has been a welcome addition, giving Perth buyers the mid-spec features they want without the boot space compromise. And with five grades to choose from, there really is a Prado for every kind of driver, whether you want a no-fuss daily in the GX or a fully loaded tourer in the Kakadu.
Australia played a central role in the development of the Prado 250. Outside of Japan, WA was the only country where prototypes were tested, with engineers putting the vehicle through its paces across varied Australian terrain to validate towing, off-road ability and mechanical durability.
That local testing shows in how the Prado handles everything from the Swan Valley to the Gibb River Road. The combination of the efficient turbo-diesel, the huge fuel tank and genuine off-road hardware makes it one of the best-equipped touring vehicles you can buy for WA's unique conditions.
