Everything You Need to Know About Plug-In Hybrids (PHEVs)
What they are, how they work, and why the all-new RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid is set to turn heads in Perth.
Thinking about making the switch to something greener?
Thinking about making the switch to something greener?
But you drive alot of kms?
That’s where Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) step in,
offering the perfect middle ground between traditional hybrids
and battery electric vehicles.
In May 2025 Toyota confirmed that the next-generation RAV4
(arriving in Australia in the first half of 2026) will include a Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) for the first time,
there’s never been a better time to understand what PHEVs are and why they might suit your lifestyle.
What Is a Plug-In Hybrid?
A Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) combines a petrol engine with a larger, rechargeable battery and one or more electric motors.
Unlike a regular hybrid, you can plug a PHEV into a charger to drive using electric power alone for up to 100km
(based on overseas development targets).
That’s more than enough range for most daily trips in and around Perth. And when the battery runs low,
the petrol engine seamlessly takes over—giving you the peace of mind of extended range
without having to stop and recharge.
What is the range of a PHEV?
The electric-only range of a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) varies depending on the model, battery size, and driving conditions.
But most modern PHEVs offer between 40km and 100km of electric driving on a full charge.
In the case of the all-new Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid, the targeted electric-only driving range is up to 100km,
based on the WLTP test cycle (a global standard for measuring vehicle range and efficiency).
This means many Perth drivers could complete their daily commute, school drop-offs, or errands without using any petrol at all.
Once the battery is depleted, the vehicle seamlessly switches to hybrid mode, combining petrol and electric power to continue driving without interruption.
How long does it take to charge a PHEV?
The time it takes to charge a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) depends on the charger type and the battery size.
For the all-new Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid, here’s what you can expect:
Using a standard home power point (AC charging):
Approx. 6–8 hours for a full charge (using a regular 240V outlet)
Using a dedicated AC wallbox (11kW):
Around 3 hours for a full charge
Using a DC fast charger (50kW):
10% to 80% in about 30 minutes
How often do you need to charge?
Here's a general guide:
If you drive under 100km per day:
You can drive almost entirely on electric power and charge daily or every other day, depending on how much range you use.
If you drive more than 100km in a day:
The petrol engine will automatically take over when the battery runs low, so charging becomes less urgent—you can simply plug in when convenient.
If you forget to charge:
No problem. A PHEV like the RAV4 simply runs in hybrid mode until you can recharge again.
Ideal Charging Routine:
Home charger or wall socket overnight: Easy and cost-effective
Public charger during errands: Great for top-ups on the go
Fast charger when needed: Quick boosts, but not required daily
Most PHEV drivers plug in at home a few times a week—just like charging your phone—keeping costs low and emissions even lower. And because the RAV4 PHEV has petrol backup, you’re never stuck.
Do PHEVs Use the Same Chargers as EVs?
Yes! PHEVs use the same charging plugs and stations as full Battery Electric Vehicles (EVs):
Type 2 AC plug (standard for home and public AC chargers in Australia)
CCS2 (for DC fast charging - like what the RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid supports)
So whether you're charging at home, a local shopping centre, or a public charger around WA, your PHEV will fit right in.
Did you know? Because PHEV batteries are smaller than full EVs, they usually charge faster—even on regular wall outlets.
Do you have to plug it in?
No. if you don’t plug in, the vehicle works like a regular hybrid.
But to get the electric range and best fuel savings, charging is recommended.
Does it cost a lot to charge a PHEV?
Charging is generally much cheaper than petrol.
The cost to charge at home will depend on your electricity rates.
How long do the batteries last?
Toyota designs all our hybrid batteries with lifespan in mind.
The new RAV4 PHEV battery also includes thermal management
to improve long-term durability.
Toyota’s first-ever RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid for Australia is more than just a powertrain update—it’s a smart, future-ready step for drivers who want to reduce fuel use, lower emissions, and enjoy electric driving without compromise.
