CHANGE THE WORLD
Presenting an automotive revolution. A car that runs on petrol, as well as electricity. It’s futuristic, yet fashionable. Conscientious, yet comfortable. It’s engineered like no car ever created; yet it drives like a normal car. The remarkable new Toyota Prius. A 4-cylinder petrol motor and an electric motor combined into one impressive vehicle.
It’s one of the most fascinating vehicles now on the road.
Prius employs a similar system to that used in modern jet planes. All shifts are controlled electronically, not mechanically. It means an effortless driving experience.
During slow running, the Hybrid System runs the car on battery power alone. This makes for a remarkably smooth, quiet ride and incredibly efficient use of energy. In fact, the petrol motor shuts down completely when it’s not needed. When the power reserves get low, the petrol engine kicks in and recharges the battery. When cruising, the electric motor and petrol engine both drive the wheels. Engine power is split between the wheels and an electric generator, which in turn drives the motor. Power allocation is controlled to maximise efficiency. If necessary the generator also recharges the battery from the surplus engine power. Under hard acceleration, the petrol power from the engine combines with the electrical power, to boost drive power and provide a smooth acceleration response.
During braking or deceleration the high-output motor acts as a high-output generator. This regenerative braking converts the kinetic energy into electrical energy, which is stored in the battery. Then when you’re stopped at traffic lights, the engine shuts down altogether, using no energy whatsoever, which is remarkably relaxing, as well as energy efficient.
